There is no crying in baseball and no crying in politics, only whining is allowed. The Presidential nomination process is all but over. Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton will face off to see who will lead the government of this country. While not crying for the politics, it does make a person like me want to weep for the country. I cannot imagine any worse choices. It is not only that neither is worthy of the position; it is the country is so plagued with divisions, problems, dangers and idiotic distractions that the choice of these two, is troublesome beyond the pale.
I am a big believer in democracy. Mr. Trump, in spite of all the mean-spirited spittle and the lack of a fundamental understanding of basic issues, won votes, won states, won delegates. He played by the rules more or less and prevailed in convincing fashion over his rivals. Give him credit for that. There are probably many reasons for the result but I will leave that for the cocooned pundits like David Brooks. It is hard to understand how a person with an incredible unfavorable rating can, in the first place, get the nomination and secondly, have any expectation to win the big one.
Mrs. Clinton also deserves credit for securing her party’s nomination even if it was against an old, feeble lefty who would take all your money and banish everyone to go work in a commune wearing a Mao jacket. It would seem the public would be tired of her shrill campaign, her corruption, her non-truths. But she is lucky, as she gets to run now against Mr. Trump. For the Republicans down the ticket, this could get very ugly.
Hard to make this stuff up and I stopped being entertained long time ago. Today, I just will wipe a small tear of sadness for the future and then get on with it.
