Now that the New York Presidential Primary is over with its predictable result, it is time to make an assessment on who will be the next President of the United States.
The Primary election cycle has been a sickening display of the worst of American politics and the democratic process. It has been short on substantive discussion and too long on character assassination. Usually, I find these elections entertaining but of late I do not see much amusement. It is frankly hard to watch and instead of turning the page to read more, I fold up the paper. (Yes, I actually read real newspapers.
So, who has the best chance to be the next President in order of the last five candidates still running?
Drum roll
The next President is likely to be Hillary Clinton. She is by far the most corrupt person to run for this office in many lifetimes. There is nothing she will not say or do to advance her ambition and personally enrich herself, her family and a litany of cronies. The email scandal is diminishing over time and while under normal circumstances she would have been under indictment, this is not going to happen under an Obama Department of Justice.
The majority of people according to polls do not trust her. No duh. However, her sway with blacks, women, Hispanics, rich white liberals plus a host of special interests give her an electoral advantage that can elect her. This is particular true when compared to the opposition. Do not you wish she would just go away?
The next possible person who has a chance to be elected is Donald Trump, the celebrity blowhard who has managed to offend almost every living person on earth. I have read much about how Mr. Trump appeals to a certain kind of voter. I can accept the frustration of many working people and people disappointed in their government but what is hard to explain is why would anyone vote for a person so totally lacking any substance? However, in a match with Mrs. Clinton, it is possible that he could be elected. Possible but not likely because there are not enough voters who would feel comfortable in turning over the reins to a guy who is mean-spirited and so full of himself, not to mention does now know anything.
The next possible person who could be elected is Senator Ted Cruz. He has shown ruthlessness in the campaign and is most definitely the smartest guy in the room. His problem is he is not likeable at all, and he has made statements showing an unrealistic view of the political landscape. Yep, he is conservative but for Middle American he is too much and not enough.
Still going down the list, in fourth place is John Kasich. He is experienced and has a reasonable temperament. There is no doubt he is conservative but he is also pragmatic. The governor, however, has a problem. He probably is not going be nominated by his party. If he could be nominated, he would probably win, as he is a nice contrast to the Obama-Clinton fatigue.
Finally, the anchorman, Bernie Sanders. He has no hope of either being the nominee for the Democrats or being elected. His views on the economy, foreign affairs, the role of government is frightening. It appeals mainly to ultra-leftist and students, who have never been in the real world and to those that still live with mom and dad plus those to do not like Mrs. Clinton.
So, this is it. Madame President. Surely we deserve better and surely we have done this to ourselves as a whole.
