It seems like a group people have been running for President for a long long time. All the speeches, rallies, debates and polls. It is tiresome. Fortunately that process is winding down and it is time to start voting. Voting, of course, is the only test that matters.
As I look at the candidates, I am amazed. Is the best we have? At this stage there are four that have drawn the most attention and one of them could actually be elected. God, help us all if that is the case.
There are two Democrats. A look at them is in order.
Hillary Clinton may be the most devious and corrupt politician of all time. Her actions dwarf even the most tainted Louisiana Land Commissioner. It is hard for me to believe that she is not under indictment for numerous violations of the secrecy act, turning favors for foreign governments to benefit the Clinton Foundation. Her history of misdeeds, character assassination and deception goes back to the beginning of democracy.
Bernie Sanders seems like a straight arrow. He also cut his hair so he does not look like that nutty professor in the “Back to The Future”. movies. His fellow Vermonters have elected him many times, which show something about their state and judgment. Simply put, Bernie appeals to leftist, socialists, and big governmentites. He really is so far out of the mainstream it is difficult to see how he could be elected or act as Commander in Chief.
On the Republican side, there is Donald Trump. He is difficult to figure out as he has insulted everyone, has no program to evaluate, is a total blowhard and is just plain mean. Maybe he is a beacon for the frustrated; maybe his celebrity status is the key element in a reality show world. However, Mr. Trump as the Republican nominee would be a disaster and if elected would be clueless on where to lead the country.
The last Republican getting so much attention is Ted Cruz. He is definitely the smartest guy in the room and a clever politician. His problem is that no one likes him and many of his positions are too conservative to appeal to independent voters. He has worked to embarrass his own party members and obstruct legislation. He is a “my way or the hiway” kind of guy, not a quality to try to pull the country together.
So there it is. The front four. Hard to imagine. Let us see what the voters want.
