What a beautiful day in Washington, the first of May, the international day of the worker and solidarity. I wonder how the million of unemployed, underemployed and just plain, “I have given up looking” feel about the occasion?
In any event, Congress is out for the week and there is little that interests me to discuss. However, and the is always an however, there maybe a few things to note.
Attention to the Boston bombing seems to have waned and probably rightly so. It appears there are lots of questions about events before the terrorists (and I can use the T-word) struck. Warnings from Russia, red flag from Saudi Arabia, lack of information sharing in law enforcement, maybe some sloppy FBI work on the pre-bombing interview. I doubt it will all be known. The intent of the Administration seems to ignore anything adverse having to do with radical Muslims. Oh, it was a work place incident. City of Boston and environs was chilling to see. A wary eye needs to be kept on the rapid expansion of surveillance, “intelligence” gathering (which did not work here) and the exercise of police powers.
On to the issue of illegal aliens, legislation has been introduced in the Senate to basically allow every illegal to stay in place, gain citizenship, eventually get government benefits and allow millions more to enter the country and probably never leave. I think there has been one hearing on the bill. I do not know if there are any more scheduled.
The issues are simple; the solutions are not so simple. 1. How does the country stop more people illegally coming into the country? 2. What to do with the 5 billion illegal aliens already here? 3. What should be the procedures to allow more people into the country? The politics involved are amazing.
There are a few things clear to me. The current Administration has no intent in enforcing real border security. Big business is pushing this to have a source of low cost labor. The economic cost to the government will be staggering. (Note: the 10-year rule on interim status is done to keep the budget impact off the grid).
The legislation if enacted will have an incredible profound affect on future political alignment and exerabate the cultural balkanization of the country. There may be some good ideas in it. However, the central government has failed to enforce the existing laws, failed at the border and failed many of the citizens whose local governments have absorbed wave after wave of “undocumented workers” and their families resulting in overwhelming local resources.
This issue is not going away. The illegal aliens here are not going back to their own country. The flood across the border is not going to stop under this Administration. Not sure how this will end. The rhetoric will soar and the emotions will run very high.
Finally there is Syria, a horrible place where the Assad regime is now using chemical weapons. Of course, Mr. Obama stated some time ago this was unacceptable and drew a red line. Such actions would cause the U.S. to spring into action. What a mess.
Of course, Mr.Obama is not going to do anything and has put himself and U. S. policy in a terrible position. He does not have to act; he simply moves the line back. However, if he does not back up his threats, he is seen as weak, his credibility further erodes, the killing continues and so may the weapons spread. If he intervenes, he risks lives of our soldiers and get involved in a costly non-winnable civil war in a very unfriendly place.
To further complicate the matter, while the Assad government is despicable, the opposition rebels are also dangerous, ruthless and supported by groups and countries opposed to the United States. How did that Muslim Brotherhood movement in Egypt work out so far? These guys are not freedom, pro-democratic patriots. They are controlled by butchers and strict Islamic fundamentalists. This will not end up good.
Finally, Mr. Obama held a press conference to tell everyone two things. The first is everything is the fault of the Congress, (aka Republicans) and secondly he is still relevant. I already know the first as Mr. Obama is never at fault. The second, I am probably are not sure about. When are person has to say he is relevant, then irrelevancy is not far away.
I will be back to discussing things I actually know something about soon! Thank goodness.
