I am bored with the election candidates. Have not heard anything new for the past 4 months. If you do not know whom you are going to vote for, then maybe you should not vote at all. The train of endless approved and non-approved idiotic commercials is so demeaning to watch. They must think we are all mush-headed.
The President stiffed world leaders at the UN General Assembly so he could go and meet with the most important people in the world, the good citizens of Ohio. He cannot seem to figure out who instigated the debacle in Libya. I guess he is still on the “ally or enemy” question but he has earned the title of honorary citizen of the State. Wish he would have spent some time being a Leader of the Free World, rather than Youngstown.
In spite of all this, there are at least some interesting things to ponder during he weekend. To wit:
1. I noticed the incredible hair whip of Russian President Putin in the newspaper today. I was wondering who does his hair and what kind of incredible gel or glue he uses to keep in combed over.
2. It appears the National Football League and its referees have reached a settlement on their labor dispute. There is a national joy over the land but I ask, is it telling there is so much attention to a game, a diversion really, played by grown men which only has value as entertainment for the masses and purpose is makes money for a bunch of Uber-one-per-centers. People cannot find work, are losing their house and public high school students graduate with out really being able to write a paragraph. But football is important. Bread and circus, anyone?
3. Back to Ohio, as I am beginning to resent even hearing the name. I understand the Electoral College and even think it is a good idea but can the fate of the world, the selection of our government, the recovery of the economy really come down to those knuckleheads? I spent 3 summers of my life as a teenager in East Cleveland. I have fond memories of Municipal Stadium, the rapid transit and the older, developed girl next door. But, really Ohio, it is too much to take.
4. I am writing a piece on the federal deficit for next week. Very interesting subject as it involves economics, politics, and international markets. The Federal government borrows on a short-term basis at a rate, of say, 0.2 percent. That is pretty good. However, I was wondering why credit cards in this country still carry rates of 12 percent, 17 percent, and 21 percent? Seems a bit steep, I think. My credit has never been downgraded like the government’s was last year. I am all for markets setting rates but I am not sure the market is working here.
5. Why are people so rude with the mundane cellular phone conversations? In the elevator, at the bank window, in the subway, in the restaurant and about everywhere else. Why do they think I want to hear them talking about some person at work, their children, what they are going to do on Saturday? Ever been in line at the grocery where is takes forever for the person in front of you to pay because they are gabbing about some insignificant facet of their life? Maddening. Rude. Not sure whatever happened to manners, privacy and consideration for the fellow man.
So, that is it. Questions to ponder for the weekend early.
Thanks for this useful article.
