The news is dismal these days. Not horrible, just dismal. Not exciting but dismal. I am weary of the Presidential candidates already but have to say, it will be interesting at the end. A few things caught my eye today:
Richard Lugar, 6 times elected U.S. Senator from Indiana, was defeated last night in the Republican primary by conservative favorite Richard Mourdock. The race was nationally portrayed as a purge of a moderate from the ranks of establishment Republicans by upstart tea party activists.
Senator Lugar has over the years been a legislative workhorse instead of a showhorse. He is an example of a good legislator grappling with important issues, trying to address and solve the problems as he saw them. He made a number of contributions, will be missed but the Republic shall survive.
The good Senator is 80 years old and friends and casual observers of him over the past year have commented to me Senator Lugar is showing his age, in his speech, his demeanor and his thought processes. His campaign was dogged by many missteps no doubt (like a residency issue) but by the size of the defeat (20 percentage points) this was not about some conservative revolution. It was simply the notion the Senator had done his service and it was time to move on. In the end, it would have been better for him to have retired, taken a victory lap than seek a seventh term. In almost every facet of life, there is a time to move on. Personal relationships, and friendships eventually can run their course. Athletes can no longer perform but hang on. Politicians lose touch and effectiveness.
I would not read too much into this defeat. Time has a way of equalizing everything. Time ran out for Senator Lugar. But, as they say, thank you for your service and good luck, sir.
Another thing caught my interest this morning. Watching the news, I noted some Democrat hack was accusing the Republicans of being obstructionists, failing to cooperate with the liberal agenda. It is curious those terms are used only when Republicans do not do what the Democrats want. For the liberals, there is no other side, no compromise, no meeting half way. An opposite view is characterized as mean-spirited, almost evil. Republicans are guilty of this also, of course, as evidenced by the gridlock that snares the government. Today’s comment by this gentleman seemed to be symbolic of the entire mess.
Gas prices have eased some, maybe 20 cents per gallon. There is an article today I read saluting the Administration for precipitating this reduction. What a bunch of crud. Gas prices are down due to market forces, the same forces that drove them up. However, gas prices are up so much in the past 2 years that I hardly called the current price a bargain. What was the writer thinking? Who is paying him off? We should all be grateful for paying a less obscene amount? Just get it right for once.
Finally, Texas Ranger outfielder Josh Hamilton hit 4 home runs in a major league baseball game last night. Only the 14th time it has been done. Now, that is a feat and much more interesting than the rest of the news.
Este artículo me ha parecido de lo más interestante.
Saluditos y buena suerte.
